I was really obsessed with this illustration. I'd read schismatrix not long before and i got a little obsessed with the idea of weird biotech space civs
The hive-men of HALE-BOPP first showed up for the cover of @imagecomics.com 's "ISLAND" magazine, issue 8, back in 2016, for a piece that connected them to the world of "HABITAT" (a Dyson Tree receiving trade goods from a Euhumanist ship) 1/3

Hey kids, time to get out your copies of Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix. Are you a Shaper or a Mechanist? Better get your applications in early!
At Cosyne, Chris Olah from Anthropic told us that neuroscientists had “3-4 years left to make a contribution”

Why was not clear.

Perhaps he was hinting at the below graph accompanying today’s Claude Science launch.

Apparently we’ll all be obsolete soon.

*A groovy anime cartoon of one of my cyberpunk space-opera stories has just appeared on Netflix

*It's extremely dark, weird, complicated, transgressive and murderously violent

*Of course that's also true of the original story, and, I'd say, even more so #ShaperMechanist #Schismatrix

I too got brain-sick from reading Schismatrix, and probably still am...

Finished this earlier. Very fascinating future depicted very well. Reminded me a bit of Sterling's Schismatrix. #scifibooks #sciencefiction #nowreading
On to this next, already pretty strange. In a good way. 📚🪐💙 #scifibooks #sciencefiction #nowreading

Bryan Johnson is going to complete his aesthetic transformation into a Vampire Diaries recurring villain, start a body-hacking cult that's straight out of Schismatrix, and then finally come to terms with gender dysphoria at like age 85.

Sent my wonderful mom a photo of last night's cooking and she, who learnt english later in life, happily remarked on the presentation of the "Shapers's Pie".
Did not expect a Schismatrix reference from her.

*Yeah, but I'm not sure it makes much difference. Shumer's a slopper, he thinks and speaks in Delvish anyway, it's his native dialect, it's just not of human origin.

*This cyberpunk book-review would win an easy A in English class at Midwestern State University

*Huh. This book review has slop art, no by-line, and an embedded ad, so I'm pretty sure that a language-model wrote this long and rather accurate review of a 1980s cyberpunk novel.

Artist John Harris sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/harris... was born on this day, so here's some of his cover artwork (1979-1986). 1: "Age of the Pussyfoot" Frederik Pohl; 2: "Annihilation Factor" Barrington J. Bayley; 3: "Strength of Stones" Greg Bear and 4: "Schismatrix" Bruce Sterling:

Schismatrix isn’t cyberpunk just because Sterling wrote it.

and the orbital in Neuromancer is a spa for the ultra rich which is abandoned and collapsing by the end of the trilogy. hard to think of a better illustration of how cyberpunk rejected the hegemonic space narrative.
Cyberpunk didn't push back against the idea that our destiny is space at all; it's just updated it for the 80s, Third Industrial Revolution like.

The climax of Neuromancer is set on an O'Neill colony and Schismatrix is set entirely in space!

Schismatrix has ruined normal books for me. I now need everything to be this weird.

This is without a doubt the strangest book I have ever read. I love it.

I am getting a potentially expensive penchant for 1980s cyberpunk 1st editions. The early Gibson in particular are crazy prices. Starting with Swanwick and Sterling which are available for merely wince-inducing $$. This one is an early target. #scifibooks #sciencefiction #bookcollecting #cyberpunk
