LRP i understand COMPLETELY why people go with "diagnosis of schizophrenia and bipolar" over schizoaffective disorder, but i do kind of wish there was more acknowledgement that schizoaffective exists haha (bipolar and schizophrenia diagnoses rule each other out--schizoaffective is in between)

it already annoys me that we separate schizophrenia and schizoaffective into thought disorder and bipolar into mood disorder (schizoaffective is just bipolar with more psychosis, and bipolar definitely leads to disordered thought and cognition), but on top of that, MOOD disorder is so misleading

I am still a worthy human being despite the fact that doctors during my involuntary psych incarceration gave me a new more stigmatized diagnosis I have to talk through with my trusted doctor to confirm, that I now have a diagnosis of schizoaffective bipolar type. In the eyes of god I am precious.

btw one reason for this is that "schizophrenia AND bipolar! wow that sounds terrible!" actually schizoaffective tends to have better outcomes than schizophrenia alone. it's a spectrum--bipolar 2, bipolar 1, schizoaffective, schizophrenia. and a TON of overlap obviously
there's contention over there schizoaffective is just "bipolar with more psychosis" or just "schizophrenia with also mood symptoms" (and contention over whether BD and SCZ are truly separate diagnoses in a meaningful way to begin with) but I think it's important to recognize schizoaffective

(btw schizoaffective means you have mood episodes but also additional psychosis outside of mood episodes; bipolar only has it DURING mood episodes)
