Realizing just now—
Of Clara Schumann’s 1200+ concerts not a single one was the same program. 🤯

An old thread reshared to celebrate Robert Schumann’s 216th birthday👇
What a great song this is from a great lieder cycle. Poor Schumann, so inventive in the piano accompaniment, doubtless aided by Clara, the better pianist by far, hurling & gnashing defiance in fate’s face through Heine’s words. Terribly poignant given the years to come. Tears my heart out every time

The opening of Clara Schumann's concerto, composed when she was 15 and premiered with Felix Mendelssohn conducting the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Can't wait to perform this with the BBC Philharmonic and Nicholas Carter at Malvern Theatres, 9 May! 🎉 malvern-theatres.co.uk/event/bbc-ph...

NO ONE:

ME: After months of listening to recordings, studying the scores, and trying to learn a few etudes, I have decided that, contra modern custom, it is the 1837 edition of Robert Schumann's Symphonic Études that should be performed, not the 1852 edition, and without the posthumous variations.

Myelita's Midday Masterpiece today @ 2pm ET on WDAV.org is Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 in Eb, the “Rhenish”

This piece is a joyful musical portrait of life along the Rhine River. Written in 1850 during a particularly happy period, it brims with sweeping themes & rustic dances.

I know I sit here advocating for a dead composer all day—BUT 80% of Clara Schumann’s performance repertoire was LIVING composers of her time. Let’s bring THAT back, please.

It’s entirely possible that someone has already written some kind of analysis on this, but I’ve noticed a fun quirk in Clara Schumann’s writing that I haven’t really seen elsewhere in other composers’ piano music

Also, on this date in 1846, Robert Schumann's 2nd Symphony was premiered at The Gewandhaus in Leipzig, with Mendelssohn conducting. The work's Bachian overtones grew out of Schumann's study of that master's music at a time when he was recovering from a severe depressive episode.
