Since 2016, I've had to rebuild my social media tribe from scratch about five times. Every time it happens, I get a little bit better at meeting new people fast.

This is why I’m bumped about this article. They start out by saying something like: “Modern science fiction, television, and movies have leaned too heavily into the angst and despair of modern society while forgetting that when done right, the genre can act as a guiding light for our future. It’s possible to both reflect today’s socio-political climate while having some fun at the same time.” Okay, cool – when have you boosted the scifi projects that actually do that? If anything, sites like GFR (and Scified, Syfy, Io9, and Screenrant …) talk about what everyone else is talking about, which is another way of saying ‘this is what everyone’s being marketed right now.’ Where’s the risk-taking, reputation-staking ‘defense of the new?’ Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t see you doing that. Picture is of a plane making a turn - illustrating the point that GFR is missing it's mark.

Let me tell you what got me thinking about this. A tumblr post ended up on Reddit and the author was quoted as follows: “12 year old boys are not evil. They’re children. And they’re susceptible to manipulation […] People turn to extremist factions when they feel ignored and dehumanised. A 12 year old boy online isn’t going to be able to read the nuances in your uber ironic but not really actually ironic “all white men are inherently trash” hot takes. They’re going to take that at face value because they’re 12 and that’s what 12 year olds do. And they’re going to feel angry, rejected and judged by your words. And then ***** like Andrew Tate get to swoop in and tell them that you’re wrong and start the ball rolling on that indoctrination.” Picture of hopeful kids wearing face masks as they participate in a STEM laboratory.

It’s science FICTION. It’s not supposed to be 100% accurate. If it was, we’d never have cell phones because we couldn’t stop saying “Hey, those flip communicators on Star Trek can never work.”

You’re almost done with this draft of Mike.Sierra.Echo and there’s a little voice inside going ‘what if this is the moment when everything gets better?’ while another one is screaming ‘what if this is the moment where you think everything was supposed to get better and it doesn’t?’ The fear has been pushing its way inside your mind for the past few months and it’s killing your work. Some quick notes on the scifi community in a post-Reddit universe - Did the scifi community grow or change as a result of the blackout?

Picture of Reddit participation data - Stand by for some sage scifi: community lessons in a post-Reddit universe. It’s been eight months since the Reddit blackout. We didn’t know what to expect last June, but we did know that Reddit jumped the shark of Internet relevance. They shut down third party apps, introduced API pricing, and crushed the biggest protest in their history. Since then, the topic of the Blackout has gone a bit dark – you can’t seem to find any top-level articles analyzing the blackout past 6/30/23 – and the media cycle has moved onto other topics.

Okay, so – cowardice – something I arrived at out of desperation. How can close personal relationships be so disappointing? Maybe this has happened to you, moments in your adult life where you need to advocate for yourself, fix a problem, address a topic. You need support from a friend to make it happen. Just like that, they refuse to defend you, start making excuses why they can’t or won’t help. If you woulda, they say. If only things were, they say. Self-respect, the sense of safety and trust you *thought* you were building with them, gone like water off a duck’s back. Ouch. Picture is of an album entitled 'Heart of a Coward,' signifying the point.

As a weird nerd, scifi is how I fit in, but never mind that. What’s important to me is ‘fitting into the world.’ I’m not an island, but many of my ‘bridges’ to everyone else have burned. Some infernos were self-inflicted, others the direct result of social arson. Here is a picture of a burning bridge to signify that point.
