Im Mittelalter enthielt Roggen und damit das daraus hergestellte Brot bis zu 20 % Mutterkorn. In verschiedenen Teilen Europas brachen immer wieder Mutterkornvergiftungen seuchenartig aus. Damals kannte man die Ursache dieser Vergiftungen nicht (Antoniusfeuer genannt).
