I escaped poverty because I am a scientist.

And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation.

Hearing that hundreds of people have been laid off at NOAA through a scientist friend who is not affected. I am furious and devastated and exhausted- and I don’t even work for NOAA. This includes scientists at the weather service, protecting our ocean resources, working with coastal communities.
I just got fired from NWS . This email is all I know. Read if you want.

Last Tuesday, I was set to give a talk on 'climate change in the Northeast' at a retirement home but had to cancel due to hourly job threats.

After nearly two weeks of overwhelming uncertainty, today it happened. I was fired from my dream of working at NOAA. I'm so sorry to everyone also affected.

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns.

100% of his salary is paid by WA state.

Elon fired him. Share his story.

People whose mission is to protect the public
All probationary federal employees at NOAA’s EMC that’s responsible for keeping all US weather model systems running have been fired with 1 hours notice. And that includes me and colleagues. We will not go quietly because we care about the NOAA mission to protect the public.

Like so many others, I was funded by NSF at a critical stage in my career; 14 months in Kenya doing research changed everything for me. The science projects funded across numerous disciplines annually are foundational to humans' and other animals' wellbeing. YES, we need to make noise. 🧪 #NSF
This is an attack on US science. NSF staff provide critical support for scientific infrastructure and global excellence. These are valuable dedicated public servants. Please contact your reps, write letters, make noise!

Are there any plans for rallies at NSF headquarters?

People that still care, even after they're gone.
Upon learning that yesterday would be my last day as a program officer at the National Science Foundation, I shared this parting message with my colleagues. The next few months will be frenetic and stressful for them. Here are some things that you can do to help them with the mission ahead. (1)

National Science Foundation fired nearly 170 workers this morning in Zoom call. This included workers who had completed a 1-yr requisite probation and shouldn't have been included in termination but were suddenly told recently that the 1-yr should have been 2-yrs, revoking their permanent status.

Firings at the NSF included permanent employees who had already completed their one-year probationary period, as well as at-will workers.

All people are touched by this, and we are all in this together!
🧪 Yet more vandalism against the global scientific community - NSF might be in America, but its research, networks and impact reach far beyond. British & European scientific bodies should stand up for their colleagues.
Colleagues, including my partner, with years of service at the agency. Some Permanent POs reclassified as Probationary. Exceptional scientists who were former professors at major institutions, and came to NSF to serve the community and ensure science thrives in the US.

🧪 Detailed data viz NYT article, out today, on the extent of funding cuts at the National Science Foundation.

This "broken pie chart" is neat & new to me: Powerfully shows the slowdown in new NSF awards across areas.

People working hard but loving it!
Let’s not lose all of this. Defend our investments in publicly-funded science. We love the National Science Foundation & want to keep doing world-leading science in Antarctica and elsewhere. Thanks to all who have worked, do work, and will work at NSF.
