Another favorite #astronomyimage -- the cloud of cosmic raw material (glowing gas and dark dust) that is sometimes nicknamed the Boogeyman nebula because of the threatening dark figure you can see within.

Amazing star-forming region, the Tarantula #Nebula, 160,000 lightyears away & 600 lightyears wide. Another great composite image produced by noted amateur astronomer #RobGendler. Massive, luminous baby stars help it to glow.

This #Hubble telescope image shows the Trumpler 14 star cluster some 8000 lightyears away. The stars are extremely young, only half a million years old. Many will end their lives in a few million years in great explosions.

Canadian Researchers Win Global Science Photo Awards
Two Canadian researchers, Liam Brennan and Allen Tian, have won prestigious awards in the 2026 BMC Ecology and Evolution/BMC Zoology joint image competition. Brennan, a master’s student at the University of New Brunswick, captured 'Intertidal education' showing undergraduate students monitoring coastal fish species during night surveys in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. His photo highlights the intersection of ecological research and education. Tian, a post-doctoral researcher at Queen’s University, won the 'protecting our planet' category with 'A bridge between past and present,' a 360-degree drone composition of the Long Sault Parkway islands. His work underscores the ecological impact of human infrastructure like the Moses-Saunders Power Dam. The competition featured 11 global entries, showcasing scientific research through photography. Brennan emphasized the role of images in building public trust in environmental education, while Tian highlighted the importance of conservation in freshwater ecosystems. Other notable entries included 'Window to the Wetlands' by Sritam Kumar Sethy and 'Tide, turtle and trust!' by Abhijeet Bayani, capturing moments of ecological significance. The photos aim to bridge scientific research with public engagement, demonstrating how visual storytelling can enhance understanding of ecological challenges and conservation efforts.
