Lovely stuff! #ScottishLiterature 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿📚
I went into Waterstones to check if my books were in stock and I couldn’t find them. A bookseller asked if he could help and told me that they weren’t there because they’ve been ‘flying out’.

They only had one left. I could have cried with happiness! 🥹

It may be worth recalling that Scott's 'The Antiquary', which I quoted from earlier today, is supposedly the origin of the word 'cliffhanger', thanks to a nail-biting conclusion to one of its chapters - illustrated below. The novel was published in 1816.

The latest thing in #ScottishLiterature re: marginalisation of #Gaelic is these curated lists calling themselves 'starter packs'. I've seen three or four now that don't include Gaelic writers, editors and publishers and they're indicative of a wider culture in the #ScottishArts, too.

"- Ah! How dark
These long-extended realms and rueful wastes;
Where naught but silence reigns, and night, dark night,
Dark as was Chaos ere the Infant Sun
Was roll'd together, or had tried its beams
Athwart the gloom profound!"

- Rev Robert Blair

It's the centenary of the wonderful Agnes Owens' birth today, so here's the longread I wrote on her life/work. It has interviews with her son; her 1st publisher, @peterkravitz.bsky.social; @sorchadallas.bsky.social; some of those who wrote introductions to the new edition & @damianbarr.bsky.social.
It's the centenary of the wonderful Agnes Owens' birth this year. Her books are being reissued & a satellite archive has officially opened within the Alasdair Gray archive. I spoke to her son, John, & wrote about this "most unfairly neglected of Scottish authors" in the @heraldscotland.bsky.social.
