In the scriptoria, the Accessibility Monks inscribed ALT TEXT PLEASE beneath every image of a sandwich. Nearby, the AI Heretics waged an endless holy war over machine-made art, most of them wearing machine-made faces.

Students these days can barely read in the dim candle light of scriptoria. Sloppy quill cutting abounds. This new "Humanist" hand has really dumbed them all down.

One thing I’ve learned from the Scriptorium book is that few monasteries actually had designated scriptoria. More commonly, scribes worked in the cloister, where they had access to light.

Techno feudalism, but without scriptoria.
Jesus Christ this is the most chilling thing I've read in ages. The "new understanding of truth" described here is not new in any way, it is basically a return to pre-literate dark ages & the inevitable result is going to be fascism.
Gen Z Is Pioneering a New Understanding of Truth
The first generation to truly grow up online, Generation Z and their cohort live in a social media ecosystem that blends facts and feelings. It’s significantly shifting how they understand what’s true...

This new book by @saracharles.bsky.social on medieval scriptoria is an excellent resource I highly recommend. Here's something I knew was true for the Eastern Mediterranean, but apparently also in Western Europe "evidence for a physical writing room within a monastery is hard to find"!

Forgive me, I keep referring to my fictional monastery having a scriptorium, even though designated scriptoria were actually rare, mainly because it’s less wordy or confusing than the alternatives.

That all medieval manuscripts are produced in scriptoria by monks, and that all of them were heavily decorated and only for emperors and kings.

Apparently in monastic scriptoria there was a whole little production line of novices preparing pens, grinding pigments, scraping parchment, and keeping the scriptorium cat off the desks.
