17/30 Smith's backers built SS Archimedes, launched in 1838, the first seagoing steamship driven by a screw. In 1840 she went round Britain. The engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel borrowed her, was convinced, and switched his new liner Great Britain from paddles to a screw.
