🔎 FOSS Highlight: SearXNG

Search without handing one provider your whole history. SearXNG pulls results from multiple search services, doesn’t profile you, and you can host your own instance.

I took this a bit further and started self-hosting a data aggregator that strips metadata and such from search engines for more privacy. It's not for everybody, I admit, but it is cool. Warning: if you haven't ever self hosted, this will send you down a rabbit hole lol. github.com/searxng/sear...

If you want to up your game even further than DuckDuckGo, use self-hosted SearXNG for maximum privacy. DuckDuckGo is a solid step up from Google, but it's still a centralized service that you don't control: it logs queries, etc and leans on Bing's index. SearXNG flips that model.

Google claims it will disable AI tools for K-12 student accounts in 2027 unless schools opt in. The catch? Schools that completely restrict Google’s AI tools will also lose access to Google Search.

I use searxng now, with the searches localized on my workstation.

They all track. Self-hosted Searxng is the real deal.

Been using Gemini; it works fine. Everything else: DuckDuckGo or SearXNG....Stop overcomplicating things.

SearXNG is a chore to run — this is the same idea, rebuilt in Rust.

RustXNG: self-hosted search with a SearXNG-compatible API. One request returns results plus page text (top 5 pages ≈32k chars).

Clean text in one call is the whole win for agent search.

Nice stack. One gotcha with Tor-only egress: big engines love throwing captchas at exit nodes, so results can thin out without any error you'd notice. If it's SearXNG, the engine stats page shows which ones are silently failing. How fast is ettin-68m reranking per query on CPU?

Privacy Badger is great, but it solves a different problem. It blocks trackers after they're detected. The search engine itself still sees your queries.

SearXNG goes a step further: you host it yourself, it queries many engines for you, and no one builds a profile of your searches. Different layer.
