This week Hairy Harmonies looks at gay takes on Christian Saints. Specifically, Saint Sebastian and John the Baptist (aka Yochanan or Jokanaan). The former is reimagined by artist/activist Derek Jarman such that the saint’s once quiet status as a gay icon became widely known, and the latter was reimagined by Oscar Wilde but banned as a play during his lifetime. These films have faults. They are imperfect art, but they are trying to be innovative and worth knowing.
First , some history on Sebastian from BBC:
> Sebastian’s emergence as a gay icon can be traced back to the culturally transformative Renaissance period of the 14th to 17th Centuries, when prominent artists including Guido Reni, El Greco and Sandro Botticelli depicted his arrow-pierced body with a smouldering homoerotic subtext.
> . . .
> Johnson suggests that Sebastian’s story may particularly appeal to anyone with a “nihilistic” or bleakly “romantic vision of homosexuality”, especially in less welcoming times. “He was someone who tried to hide who he was – a Christian – before being shunned by society and persecuted for his beliefs,” Fountain says. “A lot of queer artists have found a resonance with this narrative of exclusion.”
>
> These include Oscar Wilde, who adopted the pseudonym Sebastian Melmoth in tribute to him during his final, exiled years in Paris, following his imprisonment for gross indecency for relationships with men in 1895. Late in post-war Japan, provocative author Yukio Mishima revealed that a famous painting of Sebastian prompted his sexual awakening and recreated the saint’s arrow-stricken martyr pose in a series of celebrated photographs.

History on John the Baptist from Smithsonian Magazine:
> In the Bible and in Flaubert’s version of the story, it is Herodias who calls for John’s death. Angry that the preacher criticized her marriage to her brother-in-law, King Herod, as an unclean, incestuous union, the queen manipulates her naive daughter into asking for his execution. “His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother,” the Book of Matthew states.
>
> While Flaubert portrays Salome as an innocent pawn in her mother’s ravenous hunger for revenge against John, Wilde depicts Salome’s actions as entirely self-directed and voluntary. In his version of events, Salome doesn’t care that John (renamed Jokanaan the Prophet) slandered her mother. What bothers Salome is that Jokanaan denied her ardent romantic advances and bruised her precious ego.
## Pre-show! - Salomé (1922)
1:12:20, **SILENT** with English text
Directors: Charles Bryant & Alla Nazimova
Salomé, the daughter of Herodias, seduces her step-father/uncle Herod, governor of Judea, with a salacious dance. In return, he promises her the head of the prophet John the Baptist.
from wikipedia:
> Multiple sources have stated that the film’s cast is composed entirely of gay or bisexual actors in an homage to Oscar Wilde. According to queer film historian Vito Russo, censors “were horrified” with the film, and ordered the elimination of several scenes, one which included a homosexual relationship between two Syrian soldiers.[4] The examiner from the New York State Censorship Board wrote in their report "this picture is in no way religious in theme or interpretation. In my judgment, it is a story of depravity and immorality made worse because of its biblical background. Sacrilegious."
## Sebastiane (1976)
1:25:23, LATIN with optional English subtitles
Director: Derek Jarman, Soundtrack: Brian Eno
Reassigned to a lowly outpost, a Roman guard’s Christian beliefs clash with his gay commander’s desire for closeness.
From CriterionCast:
> A truly erotic feature, the film turns the ‘male gaze’ upon itself, gloriously photographing the male form, following the story of a group of men and their interaction with an antagonistic psycho-sexual Roman captain, whose pagan faith doesn’t match well with Sebastiane’s Christian beliefs. Scored by one Brian Eno, this film is easily one of the most singular and important debuts of the late-1970s.
(ending revealed)
from FilmThreat:
> By portraying Sebastian’s religious mania as an internalized condition rather than a full-blown dramatic conversion, the film offers an honest view of one man’s private struggle with faith and how this inner conflict creates quakes around him. In his martyrdom, Sebastian accepts death rather than live in a society which he views as debauched and repugnant. The victory belongs to Sebastian, who never gave up what he believed in and never surrendered to those he could no longer respect. The film’s final shot, with the soldiers holding their empty bows and looking at the results of their marksmanship, is chilling and devastating: a warped society destroying what it cannot understand or control, and realizing too late the horror of its actions. “Sebastiane” is an intelligent and provocative work of art. Its reappearance is a fine reminder of Jarman’s unique talent and his willingness to take on difficult subjects with a frank and adult style.
## Salome’s Last Dance (1988)
1:29:08, English with optional English subtitles
Director: Ken Russell
On Guy Fawkes Day (Nov. 5th, 1892) Oscar Wilde goes to a performance of his controversial, banned play ‘Salome’. The ‘theatre’ is a brothel and the performers are prostitutes.
from Film-Authority:
> Salome’s Last Dance isn’t an easy film to sit through, consisting largely of monologues which have gained a certain mustiness over time. But the costume and staging are as imaginative as might be expected; Russell was a creative force, and it would be nice if the fan-boys who crowd around his most salacious work (The Devils, Lisztomania) showed the same interest in this difficult, but surprisingly melancholy and mature take on the methodical literary madness of Oscar Wilde.
