barinasuchus' postcranial proportions are largely speculative, with some paleoartists modelling them based on the long-legged baurusuchids, whereas others give them a stockier and more robust build based on sebecus

I like the idea that a giant Sebecus and giant bear exist(ed) in Gwangi’s world.
Instead of finishing existing projects, naturally I started sculpting a new skull instead. Here's a preview of the skull of Barinasuchus.
The fossil only has the front of the snout preserved. So, I'm basing the anatomy of the missing parts on Sebecus and other related taxa.

Looking through some of my old notes, I see that not only is this far from my first bout of dino-obsession, it's not even my first time pondering Dr. Norell's book! I just didn't sketchnote it as extensively last time.

sebecus ayrampu was described in 2021. the holotype is quite badly damaged, making some features of its cranial anatomy difficult to discern

in the same paper, the authors reassigned material from the contemporary ipururo formation in peru to barinasuchus, as this material was originally considered to represent a species of sebecus when published in 1977 by eric buffetaut and robert hoffstetter

The skull on the far left belongs to Sebecus icaeorhinus, while the skull in the mid foreground is clearly that of some kind of ursid (can't nail down which species). The ribcage associated with the bear, however, has neural spines that are far longer than any bear I know of.

I thought it would be cool if a giant Sebecus and a giant bear coexisted with Gwangi. Given this is a Harryhausen movie with prehistoric monsters living in one ecosystem, it wouldn't be unfitting for the general vibes of the film's setting.

I also thought that Gwangi standing over these skeletons went pretty hard. But you know what would go even harder? If those were the skeletons of animals Gwangi actually killed. Gwangi killing a giant Sebecus and a giant bear? Pretty rad.
