It’s an idea that’s been tried in railway preservation for a few years. I know I was always an advocate for training guards from 16 so they could pass out, experienced, on or as near to their 18th birthday as possible. Drivers effectively start training at 18 when qualified to be fire/secondman.

How do you keep yourself entertained when stopped in a loop? My dad (who was a secondman at Leicester) would often just read a newspaper or book, especially in the wee small hours.

Great stuff, I was a secondman at Ipswich from 1985 to 1988, I was one of the ones doing the loco changeovers until the 86s went through to Norwich in 1987. That's a big reason for building the layout, to recreate those days.

At least they don't need a secondman or shunter to go down to track level and hook on/off. Heavy chains to lift, vac bags that want to go everywhere bar onto their opposite number and people who can't read signs about not using the toilet in the station having a piss or poo down your back.
