Seefin • Wicklow

This Neolithic passage tomb crowns the summit of Seefin in the Wicklow Mountains.

The name Seefin derives Suí Finn — Fionn's Seat. A reference to the famous Fionn Mac Cumhaill, whose Fianna hunted through the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains.

This what can be seen from the entrance. The top of the cairn caved in a few years ago and the light you can see is from the top were it's open to the sun.

This is the "entrance" but I'm not sure if it's passable. I've never tried.

For #ForestFriday this is a gentle river and forest walk before the real hike up to Seefin cairn begins. I think the swirl on this rock is man made. I don't remember seeing it there before.

Beautiful blue skies today. Fine weather brought out the crowds though and we had a hard time finding anywhere to stop and hike.

Ended up at Seefin cairn in Wicklow (see next few posts). Great views from the top of the mountain.

Perfect weather yesterday at Seefin Mountain in Wicklow. This is the view from the 5,000 year old passage tomb at the top of the mountain. I'll try to follow up with some photos of the tomb.

County Wicklow is the final edition of the Irish Archaeology Alphabet 🏺

The mountains and valleys of the 'Garden of Ireland' have a wonderful variety of monuments. Here's some of my favourites: the monastic complex of Glendalough, the mountaintop Seefin Passage Tomb, and Rathgall Hillfort.

Seefin passage tomb looking fine in the afternoon sunshine. It is estimated to be 4 to 5 thousand years old.

Walked up to a Bronze Age burial mound, a passage tomb at the top of a mountain called Seefin in Co. Wicklow. A thousand years older than the pyramids in Egypt! Amazing place. Perfect day.
