#Seemings
For example. Today I watched this talk on "skilled seemings" to try to understand my experience of bird-watching. Skilled seemings are when things appear to you as a result of expert knowledge, they stand in contrast to ordinary seemings. Neat distinction. #philsky

A) many people think machines in principle cannot have subjective experience. This seems to me to require some sort of dualism, which I don't find convincing. It requires you to posit a new universe of physics, and often the claim boils down to gut feelings, aka "dualist seemings."

currently attempting to find a therapist and one of the candidates who seemings incredibly appealing to my needs is probably going to get a no from me because he's far too hot 😔😔😔

Why do we sometimes believe something against the evidence?

My recent paper in AJP proposes a new explanation, suggesting that it may be 'caused' by harmful #seemings.

The first one just seems obviously silly, since it'd also be a good argument for geocentrism. Indeed, they cite the impressions of children as evidence of "dualist seemings." Plus, it requires you to assume you are well able to assess your own mental status, which is clearly at least not 100% true.

Creatures of imagination, of dream and nightmare. The fae come from another realm, the Dreaming, but were stuck here long ago. The world is inimical to them, rife with Banality, the force of uncaring tedium and disbelief. In order to survive, they cloaked themselves in human seemings.

Trying an AI app that converts pdfs of academic papers to audio files. The AI voice just said "But what are these seemings?" with such pathos and plaintive passion that I quite forgot that I was reading a dry analytic philosophy paper arguing for a reductive account of seemings. 😂

If this isn't clear, my new year's resolution for us is that we speak of intuitions, seemings, etc. as vibes until someone comes along and explains how they're meant to work, why that's bad, and what's wrong with trusting vibes if they're distinct from these other weirdo alleged mental states

Anyone says they use bayesian analysis but won't publish their spreadsheet of priors and calculations is just doing seemings. Don't be fooled.

But in your examples all the potential 'seemings' look like doxastic seemings, and that is not the thing that phenomenal conservatives are appealing to. Whether phenomenal seemings exist is obvs controversial but if they do it's a bit hard to see how your questions apply to what they're meant to be.

it seemings to be a trend yes,,

The loudest supporters of AI I've encountered are men in the C-suite of companies who have made other bad decisions and seemings have not encountered a single professional consequence for.
Do people want AI everywhere or are tech companies just insisting really loudly that everyone else does and you’ll be left behind if you don’t want it too?

I don't really like seeming = low-credence belief but if it does entail belief then you still can't avoid having false beliefs about non-seemings by retreating to beliefs about seemings

As a traditional epistemologist (i.e., someone too lazy to learn maths), I'm heartened that so many of my colleagues don't care about base rate neglect when deciding whether to use Pangram to flag AI-assisted plagiarism. Let's all just trust our seemings/vibes and punish accordingly

Well the development over the medieval period is that demons (and eventual capital T The capital D Devil) can create "seemings" which make magic appear real
July 26, 2026 at 6:47 PM
I think seeming folks won't count any of your examples as involving seemings in the relevant sense. Its common to distinguish doxastic from phenomenal seemings (and to hold that 'seems' talk is ambiguous), and all your examples look like doxastic seemings at best (beliefs/inclinations to believe)...
November 21, 2024 at 11:10 AM
Most are beads and marbles, pretty butt still-born seemings never to grow larger than their gleamings, but some we nurture, or cling as stubborn feti to the womb of our brain.
August 22, 2026 at 2:37 AM
this is how you can tell they're fascists. they basically think the 'reasons' are accidents/seemings, and the essence of the thing is the Vibes they perceive from it
