October 28: How it is portrayed in Greek literature
From the poetry of Elytis and Seferis to the diary accounts of Theotokas, the authors convey to the next generations the message of resistance October 28, 1940 is one of the most important milestones in recent Greek history. The Italian attack on Greece and the decision of the Greek people to resist inspired poets and prose writers, who captured in their works the heroism, agony, sacrifices and human cost of the war.

If he—the Charioteer, not Seferis—seems severely classical and a bit wooden, consider this sensitive portrait in marble of 'The Melancholy Roman'. Likely the general and consul Titus Quinctius Flamininus who, in 197 BC, gave autonomy to the Greeks—who then decided to honor him with their melancholy.

For my (slightly delayed) September post I serve up #Lepanto ( #Nafpaktos) and #Seferis as mezedakia to accompany a fine carafe of #ouzo.

More than four decades ago, the Greek composer and public intellectual Manos Hadjidakis issued a warning that now reads less like a reflection on fascism than a prophecy of our own time. The greatest ...

The political question of our time is not whether monsters have returned. It is what kind of society produces them, what forms of power need them, and what pedagogical machinery teaches people to follow them. The monster is not the end of the analysis but its beginning. znetwork.org/znetarticle/...

Seferis records that the waters of the Castalian Spring have a taste of thyme, but for me they have had always the faint flavour of mint.
Cold and pure, they nourish the roots of the giant plane-tree which stands guard over this ancient precinct.

What happens when “monsters” become an explanation instead of a question?

Henry Giroux argues that focusing on individuals can obscure the institutions, political economy, media, and culture that normalize authoritarian violence.
