That's what the term "mortification" is supposed to imply (Tom's Imperial Phase analogue term is "self-definition", therefore "mortification" is an opposite of that, becoming null). It's a public disciplining, almost a religious rite that serves to punish and perhaps purify someone they once loved

Something a grad professor of mine reminded students, which I try to pass on, is that the university developed out of monastic traditions—so if sitting on your ass trying to unidirectionally focus your attention feels like self-mortification, it’s meant to.

When I think of Opus Dei, what immediately comes to mind is a Dan Brown book (Angels and Demons) where Silas self flagellated with a whip(self mortification).

As a Catholic I must admit that not using the climate changing plagiarism machine certainly beats the hair shirt when it comes to enjoyable extreme mortification. Quite glad to have this option.

I just saw a shotgun post against all "LLM users.' As someone who uses them for my own consumption, and I think my own productivity, with a lot of caution and restraint .. I'm just saddened. To me it is just another case where the Buddhist "middle way" applies: "the path of balance that avoids the two extremes of extreme self-indulgence and severe self-mortification."
