In April 1947, the editorial board of the Daytona Beach News-Journal noted critically that the fascist named Gerald LK Smith was coming to Florida to promote the "White Primary Bill." They hoped Smith's association with that racist electoral legislation might scare away supporters.
HATEMONGER COMES TO FLORIDA Gerald L. K. Smith is headed for Florida on a mission of organizing a crusade of hatred, racial and group intolerance and political discrimination. This is the kind of work that has made him infamous over the Nation. Smith is national director of the selfstyled "Chris-tian Nationalist Crusade," an organization that is essentially Fascist in its ideas and declared aims. The fact that his organization makes shameless and hypocritical use of the name of a religion which teaches that God is love makes it all the worse and all the more dangerous. Smith says that he has been doing "or-ganic" work in many Southern States, including Florida, with the aim of building a propaganda machine upholding the White Supremacy idea and its political aims and methods. And the fact that he will spend some time, and soon, in Tallahassee seems to maks one of his immediate aims rather clear. Florida's Legislature is in session. Before it adjourns it will have passed or turned down a so called White Primary bill which proposes to take control of primary elections away from the State itself and place that control in the hands of the political parties in the State-the Democratic Party chiefly inasmuch as it is the only party with strength. Proponents of White Primary laws openly declare that their purpose is to prevent Negroes from voting in primaries in which national officials are to be elected— in the face of the fact that the U. S. Supreme Court has ruled that they have a right to vote in such elections. Is Smith headed for Tallahassee to pull strings for the White Primary bill? It could be. He has disclosed that he is working closely with Herman Talmadge, recently deposed as Georgia's Governor-by-usurpa-tion, and with Mississippl's Sen. Bilbo— both proponents of White Supremacy and party control of primaries. He may be heard from along these lines in Tallahas-see.
