Sel was on guard duty in Ul'dah at the time. About to be overrun, a band of adventurers helped push the monster back just far enough so her and a couple other guards escape into the quicksand and barricade the door with other survivors.

Sel initially just wanted to test her new skills as a Viper, this being her first time she had a chance without outside interference. By the end, she embraced being a heel (villain) champion, even adopting the title The Dawnbreaker.
