#Serano
* what Serano calls the union of oppositional and traditional sexism, more accurately

thinking about the 'Julia Serano has blood on her hands because Whipping Girl made me feel bad' discourse popular on twitter a few years back
November 2, 2026 at 9:21 PM
Even Serano didn't define it as intersection of transphobia and misogyny right from the start. She was talking about the intersection of hierarchical & oppositional sexism. Accuracy is way too much to expect from discourse aficionados though.

Talia and Emma are joined by Julia Serano to discuss her book "Sexed Up". They speak about sexualization as a force that emerges in many oppressive paradigms, and meditate on the shortcomings of popular feminisms that have persisted since the days of the second wave.

Our discussion of "Whipping Girl" is now out, wherever you listen to podcasts!

I haven't read it yet (bad t-slur here I know) but I swear this is the premise of Whipping Girl by Julia Serano.

I think this is largely driven by their tendency to view trans ppl as especially "contagious" & "corruptive", as discussed in this essay (last "Moral Panics" section): juliaserano.medium.com/anti-trans-g...
& also toward the end of this recent talk I gave: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJq9...

Most debates in which people argue about who really faces transmisogyny tend to involve competing definitions that never get aired out. Even the term’s creator, Julia Serano, uses a different definition than those I’ve seen gain popularity around me, which themselves are not unanimous.

Also, I was just listening to Emma's and your discussion with Julia Serano when I found this post of yours. Quite a funny coincidence.

yes, I discuss the interplay of oppositional & traditional sexism a bit in this essay: juliaserano.medium.com/what-is-tran...
but flesh it out further in this encyclopedia essay, specifically in the "Transmisogyny and Intersectionality" section: www.juliaserano.com/av/Serano-Tr...
What Is Transmisogyny?
My 2007 book Whipping Girl is probably best known for two things: It popularized “cis” terminology (which I did not coin) and introduced…

julia serano must have the patience of a saint

i think the reason britain is uniquely predisposed to terfism is because, to cite Julia Serano, transsexuals cross from one social classification to another and british society is built to be perfectly stratified and rigid. Ronnie Corbett once said: “I know my place”. We depart our place.

Lily notes Serano's a tendency to dismiss or demean oppression that might undermine her theory.

I don't know about their personal relationship (and Halberstam for his part enthusiastically teaches Serano and Whipping Girl) Serano has never seemed to care for him and queer anti-normativity.
October 28, 2026 at 3:37 PM
many will be shocked and surprised that serano is also critical of academic gender studies (because a lot of people either think gender studies is the Key to Being at the Top of the Epistemic Hierarchy of Feminism or think anything that the far-right has a bugbear about is above reproach forever)

As to why they get Like That with us, I refer to Serano (2007) et al.
October 30, 2026 at 7:28 PM
There is definitely something in now "gender non-conformity" can never actually be reconciled that Serano desperately tried to sidestep.
October 28, 2026 at 3:47 PM
transness is the Seat of Gender Non-conformity and it seems like certain trans people (Serano included in this) does not like that.
October 28, 2026 at 4:38 PM
this problem is ultimately rooted in transmisogyny and if you wanna learn more about how that works on a systematic level i can not recommend enough that you read Whipping Girl by julia serano. helped me navigate a lot of shit early in my coming out
November 2, 2026 at 1:11 PM
Serano said it best. People treat "being trans" like a free for all, in that every single one of us who identifies as trans is trans, with no need to make distinctions. This ends up with people talking over each other and being less welcoming to trans people who are trans in different ways

*realized that paragraph is not Serano lmao my point still mostly holds
October 28, 2026 at 10:38 PM
it feels especially pointed as a Senior being groomed for a Manager roll, still groveling to have too much work all the time. i feel like some kind of Whipping Girl by Julia Serano.
October 31, 2026 at 2:06 AM
It's kind of actually super weird that Serano herself came up with the concept of "intrinsic inclinations" and then in that paragraphdenies that most lesbians might have these "intrinsic inclinations" to be boyish. Intrinsic inclinations for me, but not for thee?
