No one loved sestinas 😆 but I did get one good one, and the sestina drafts + prose poem drafts, in combination, helped me diagnose some problems.

I’ll look at cinquains. I haven’t written in fixed forms since HS, and I hate the villanelle, so I was specifically avoiding that (replacing it with sestina for similar construction) and I have an accounting major who I thought might love sestinas. That kind of brain.

Cinquains can be good for teaching simplicity and focus bc they’re so short. I feel like the sestina is one of the hardest forms (easy to learn, hard to master). Maybe the villanelle is a good middle ground?

Prolly gonna cut sestina—
Too many forms where it matters what happens at the end of the line (ghazal, sestina, sonnet, Golden Shovel)… We did prose poems, haiku and abecedariums (acrostics) (where the ends don’t matter). Maybe mesostics?

In the first unit of my poetry class I teach some standard forms (although I’m going to retool this next semester because i need them to learn *things* like enjambment, not how to count). So far their favorites are Golden Shovel and Pantoum, and their least favorite is Sestina

so i wrote a sestina this afternoon. felt compelled. i’m sweating now. tbh i found 6 lines in my phone notes and made it work for better or worse. i may have messed up, but that’s whatever. my grandma liked it. #poetry

if i may relate in turn... i have admiration for your trenchant (and often sagacious) comments. they are sometimes densely constructed, like a sestina, but sometimes deceptively sparse, like a haiku. then they go poof like a mission impossible briefing! : )
