Good Evening BlueSky! 🐿️

Golden morning light along the forest floor and this Eastern Grey Shadow-tail comes to check if you have any nuts. Winter's comin'.

The grey squirrel has a silver-grey coat, with a brownish face and feet, and pale underside. It has a characteristically bushy tail. It is distinguished from the red squirrel by its larger size, grey fur, and smaller ears without tufts. However, grey squirrels can vary in colour, with some appearing slightly ginger. Spiritually, squirrels are symbols of resourcefulness, adaptability, playfulness, and organization. Dreaming of a squirrel may be a sign to take on more responsibilities or adopt a positive thinking mindset. If you see a squirrel in person, stay positive and don't give up on your dreams.

Good Morning Blue Sky!

As you can plainly see, I'm not a bird, I'm a squirrel - better known as a shadow tail. "Squirrel" means "shadow tail," from the Greek skia "shadow" + oura "tail."

Squirrels are generally small rodents with slender bodies, bushy tails and large eyes. In general, their fur is short, soft and silky, and ranges in thickness from species to species. The color of their fur is also highly variable and can be whitish, gray, yellow, red, brown, or even black.

This is a tree-mendous shot of an Eastern gray shadowtail, captured in a moment of pure, nutty focus. This little fellow is perched on a dead branch, perhaps branching out into a modeling career, which seems to be going well given its pose. Its fluffy, bushy tail cascades down the side of the stump, a true tail of woodland elegance. The squirrel has a rather cheeky expression, looking directly into the lens as if to say, "Are you going to pay me in acorns for this?" The natural lighting highlights its thick, grey coat, making it look quite plump and healthy. It's truly squirrely and captivating!

In many cultures, black shadowtails are considered to be a symbol of good luck. 🐿️

"Squirrel" means "shadow tail," from the Greek skia "shadow" + oura "tail." There is no firm record of why -- though we can easily venture some guesses based on the animal's huge fluffy tail. And, though they may appear smaller—black is slimming, don't you know—they are exactly the same size as their gray counterparts. Black squirrels are dark from stem to stern. They lack the white belly fur found on gray squirrels with normal pigmentation, a fact you'd think might cause them some trouble.

Black squirrels are actually the Eastern Grey Squirrel. The difference in colour comes from a genetic anomaly that prevents their fur from turning grey. Most people agree that black squirrels seem to be dominating the wildlife scene in Toronto.

Well, look who decided to pop up over the grassy hill this evening; the black shadowtail with the cute ears and a shiny catchlight eye making an appearance!

A close-up of a small, black morph eastern grey squirrel, perched in vibrant green grass. The animal is captured in profile, actively eating a small, reddish item held between its front paws. The creature's fur is entirely black, and it has striking, bright blue-white eyes that catch the light. The strong backlighting creates a subtle halo effect around its silhouette, highlighting the fine texture of its fur. The photograph utilizes a shallow depth of field, rendering the foreground and background into soft, abstract blurs of color. The foreground is dominated by the sharp, bright green blades of grass, while the background consists of smooth transitions of purple, white, and pale yellow light. The lighting is dramatic and bright, suggesting a late evening sun. This strong lighting, combined with the vivid colors, creates a visually appealing and dynamic image. Text in the bottom left corner identifies the photo as "Photography by Douglas ©2025 @DarkWaterPhotoMedia".
