They’re calling it the most surprising Persian victory since the Emperor Valerian was captured during the Battle of Edessa by Shapur I

Shapur I’s relief of triumph over Valerian. It depicts the Roman Emperor Valerian kneeling before Shapur. Shapur defeated him in battle & he became a prisoner. The Emperor Philip the Arab is depicted standing & Gordian III is dead at the feet of Shapur's horse.

This relief depicts Shapur I’s victory over the Roman emperor Valerian in 260 CE. Shapur was known as the ‘king of kings’ and ruled the Sasanian Empire. Earlier Shapur won a military victory against the Roman emperor Philip I. 🗃️

#ReliefWednesday - Sassanid relief depicting the triumph of Shapur I (r. AD 240-270) over Valerian at Naqsh-e Rostam, located 3 km north of Persepolis. It is the most impressive of eight Sassanid rock carvings cut into the cliff beneath the tombs of their Achaemenid predecessors.

Damn, they actually went for Shapur I and Valerian

In the third century, Roman armies were routinely embarrassed by Shapur I, the  ‘king of the kings’ of the Sasanians. Shapur defeated Gordian III, forced the Roman emperor Philip I to pay blood money, and reportedly used Valerian as a footstool!

No western leader has been this humiliated by Persia since Emperor Valerian became Shapur I's literal footstool. Iran should add a statue of Trump to Enghelab Square.

I’m pretty happy with where my Sasanian rules for #strengthandhonour are at. So maybe a big game… Barbalissos! 60000 odd Romans against the best the Spah has and led by the Shahanshah Shapur I himself. Historically the Romans get hammered here but let’s see if this is a bit tighter… #spreadthelard

For those who might not know. The original is a third century relief showing the Sasanian King of Kings Shapur I with his three defeated Roman enemies: Gordianus III (dead under the horse’s hoof), Valerian (captured: Shapur grabbing his wrist) & Philip the Arab (forced to a treaty; kneeling).

Because history is so often written by the victors, it’s difficult to discuss ancient history without making the Romans our protagonists- this week we look at the life and career of Persian king Shapur I, discussing why his achievements surpassed his Roman rivals

By Teutates! How can the Romans let a man named Shapur run to be a tribune of the plebs? They must be mad! It stands to mockery that these men of the East worship only one god. Cingetorix would never allow such a travesty to play out in our sacred swamps.

So when, exactly, does Trump get captured by Shapur?
