we even have a real world example of this. the sharpeyes system in China is very effective... at being abused for the CCP's gain and nothing else. its incredibly scary living in that society knowing that you can't even trust your neighbors.

By the time Stede's focus was all on him, he'd shoved the ice pack back in the freezer, and was dressed and ready for their anniversary dinner. Even had a new dangly earring gifted from Anne and Mary to wear–and so did Stede. But–how the fuck, Ed?–he'd forgotten about the cobblestones. He'd read a Czech fairytale once, called Long, Wide, and Sharpeyes. Something about a prince getting a princess–with help. So, okay, he was ignoring that moral. He didn't want to *need* help, he just wanted to be Long himself, able to cross vast distances with a single bound. He could hang onto Stede's arm, though, without its having to mean anything beyond wanting his boyfriend close. If he stumbled a bit, he could just cling tighter. And if Stede noticed, he still didn't say anything. Until they passed a blacksmithing shop that advertised do-it-yourself classes. And went in, because swords and wee animals forged of iron; who wouldn't go in and check out candelabras and octopus-shaped coat hangers? Apparently, they also had leatherworks, and wooden crafts as well. Because suddenly Stede, who had noticed notbing, said nothing, tugged him over to a display in one corner. "Walking sticks! We'll have to figure out how to wrap it up, if it doesn't fit in a suitca–" "I don't need a cane." He'd blurted it out without thinking, just the same knee-jerk reaction from that soup of pressure–Blackbeard–dad. Stede hadn't used the word cane, but what if he had? Why did Ed have to deny so much, protest so vehemently, against something that would help him? "Well, I'm happy to support you, love, but you might end up somewhere on your own or–when the crew get here–you might..." Stede put his hands on his hips. "I'm not saying I'll be jealous, but I don't *really* want to watch you hanging on to Anne all night."
