However, other Native inhabitants of the area were not consulted nor did they agree with opening this area to settlement. Namely, the Shawnee, Lenape, Mingo, and Wyandot peoples were not signatories.

Patterns in the cliff face are accentuated by green and blue shades of moss and lichen. Lower falls area of Jackson Hole.

Fairytale ferns.
Native Christmas Ferns surround a rocky runoff area at the beginning of miles of ferns on the River to River trail just north of Hayes Creek in Shawnee National Forest. Looks cooling even if the day was not.

Across Oklahoma, libraries and their communities rely on federal funding for critical programs and resources. Read more about how federal dollars support patrons in Shawnee (paywalled article): www.news-star.com/2025/07/lett...

Tell your members of Congress to #FundLibraries: ala.org/fundlibraries
Screenshot of an article in The Shawnee News-Star. Headline: "Letter to the Editor: Libraries Need our help". Details: "By April Stobbe, Shawnee, OK. July 11, 2025." Text in article: "Dear editor, Some of my earliest and fondest memories are of the second floor of the Shawnee Carnegie Library on Broadway. I can still recall the worn marble stairs leading to the children's area, filled with the warm, humid scent of books. We'd often lie on the floor to watch reel-to-reel movies or enjoy story time led by an animated librarian whose name I wish I remembered. Every visit concluded with a stack of books checked out for the week. My children share similar precious memories at the "new" library on Main Street, enjoying added amenities like a toy area with a wooden train and movies on tape or DVD. Many of these crucial programs are predominantly supported by federal funds specifically allocated to libraries. Our own State Representative, Stephanie Bice, serves on the House Appropriations Committee and has the power to ensure this vital funding continues in next year's federal budget."

So, I was looking for something entirely unrelated when I found this, which is apparently an ad for a Halloween horror marathon from 1961.

That's plenty great on its own, but for my fellow Kansas City peeps, look at what the participating theaters are...

Some trees along a path to a bridge. Technically a park, but you don't know that. 🤫 I really loved how the ivy engulfed these trees. It made the area look so lush. 🌳

Made a wish at the wishing well. Hope, health, healing in the season ahead for the earth and humanity.
One of many old stacked stone wells dotting Shawnee National Forest, last remnants of old homesteads. This one is in a small clearing and has a trail named for it, the Wishing Well Trail, in the Lusk Creek Wilderness area. Fallen tree leaves top a small fern growing down from the top edge of the well 10/25/2025.

Went to "Garden of the Gods" in the Shawnee National Forest. Shaped by glaciers and ancient seas, the area is scattered with rocky cliffs and outcroppings. But forget the geology lesson, the place is simply one gorgeous scenic view after another! 😀 😮

Detected a bald eagle today!! I listened to the recording and sure enough, sounds like he is back!

Checking app.birdweather.com shows 3 other stations heard one in the last 24 hours, and the station in Shawnee heard one within 30 minutes of mine!

Going to be keeping an eye on the river

Natural seating with the best view in the forest.
Owl Bluff, Shawnee National Forest, Illinois. Shadowed rock layers form a perfect bench to sit and contemplate the world. Trees frame an open area of rock covered with moss, lichen, and patches of hardy grasses and wildflowers. Below, tree tops for as far as the eye can see. Quiet enough to hear the very faint sound of unseen water rushing over rocks in Lusk Creek at the base of the bluff.

Rock overhang beside old trail 497 in Shawnee National Forest. Ferns and trees line the rocky hillside. The morning sun has not yet reached this area. Favorite spot because not that many people use this trail anymore.
