i'd also shenmo and xuanhuan are pretty close but sometimes shenmo is more used for older classic novels like journey to the west

Working on some art notes for Scion: Journey to the Wild West, featuring everyone’s favorite Black & Chinese-American Scion, Little Mao, taking over for Sun Wukong in this Wild West/Wuxia/Shenmo mashup.

Journey to the West is a classic 16th-century shenmo fantasy novel, a genre involving monsters and deities of Chinese myth. The first film adaptation was Cave of the Silken Web (1927), which features the heroes trapped in a cave by spider demons. #WyrdWednesday

Ne Zha isn't Xianxia, it's Shenmo 神魔

Sword and Fairy is Xianxia however, it's probably the quintessential xianxia.

I’ve always enjoyed the designs of European dragons. In my story, I’ve termed these mortal beings ”conquest dragons” to differentiate from the immortal-born Chinese dragon. However, I also have a deep fondness for yaoguai tales, particularly in the shenmo genre.

The term "shenmo (novel)" is now rarely used, I mean, compared with others like xianxia, wuxia, etc.
It generally refers to long novels that tell stories involving gods, Buddhas, demons, and ghosts. Typical examples include "Investiture of the Gods" and "Journey to the West".

What about shénmó (神魔)?

It would also be helpful if there was a Wikipedia entry on Xuanhuan (as there is for Xianxia), just so ordinary people can easily see and understand what the terms refer to.

There is interestingly a Wiki article on Shenmo - which includes a reference to the term shenmo xiaoshuo - which may be

No, Xuanhuan is known for lots of powerful gods and such. Shenmo is just an older term that I'd say is pretty equivalent but more for classics, whereas Xuanhuan is kind of the variant that's being written by modern authors. Haven't seen A Chinese Ghost Story but that's more zhiguai/folktales?

both xianxia and shenmo would be considered high fantasy by western standards. but that does not make them the same. we're looking at the differences

What about shenmo, like Journey to the West?
February 10, 2025 at 6:52 PM
i read a small book named: Guide de conversation pratique (1959)

and it's so interesting how they wrote pinyin back then!

e.g.:
帽子,饺子 maoz, jiaoz
主角 zhujiao
谁 shui
什么,多么 shenmo, duomo
协会 xiehuei

(sadly they didn't add any tone markers :') )

Maybe we need to coin a new wordage that includes all of them 😅

A: “What dramas do you watch?”

B: “I like Wuxia dramas the most”

A: “And what about you? Which dramas do you like?”

C: “I like Xianxia/Shenmo/Xuanhuan dramas”

A: “Hmmm?”

Wiki:

“Shenmo… is a subgenre of Chinese fantasy fiction that revolves around the deities, immortals, demons and monsters of Chinese mythology”

Yes, in fact shenmo sounds more appropriate, but it still doesn't convey the "xia" spirit. Xianxia is still my preferred label.

What do the discourse be about over there? I was hoping that shenmo would be niche enough that the fans at least tolerate each other lol
March 25, 2025 at 5:51 AM
a better word to use than Xuanhuan for the type of distinction the other people are wanting to make (though they also reject the term shenmo as old fashioned)
