For this week's #FindsFriday here is a sherd of a ceramic vase from a villa in Roman Spain, decorated with a two-headed snake.

This iconography is associated with the god Sabazios, who was worshipped privately in domestic settings.

im so god damn curious about the sift and sculk's relations and how long this has been planned, even in conceptual stages

was the sift's outline made before, during, or after the wild update? did the mourner sherd inspire the singer, or did the singer inspire the mourner?

Bottom row:

• lead truck, child’s toy, possibly 1920s/1930s
• sherd of blue & manganese Westerwald pottery, a decorated grey salt-glazed pottery 17th/18thC
• piece of black flint. Nearly ignored it but picked it up, turned it over only to find the sweetest fossilised bivalve shell embedded in it.

Cont.
• Gambier of Paris Clay tobacco pipe, 19thC, featuring a man’s head known as Le Guetteur (the watchman)

Middle row:
• Green glass duck, broken, too sweet not to take home
• handful of handmade dress pins, copper alloy, 14th to 18thC
• Transferware sherd, blue on white, showing a Waterman 2/

It’s the end of September. Haven’t had much time for #mudlarking this month but here are nine sweet finds spotted over the last few weeks. From the top, left to right:
• corner piece from a Medieval Penn tile featuring fleur-de-lis pattern ⚜️
• limestone marble, possibly from Salzburg 17th/18thC 1/

My writing is in the tenth issue of local zine The Mystic Moneymaker!

If you can procure a copy, you'll find coffee, depression, oily tendril creatures, and arguments about brutalism.

Also, a little sherd of my soul is trapped within each printing of the story. Not quite sure how that happened.

NEW Sherd of terra sigillata pottery from Roman Tuscany, stamped with a large, ornate image of an altar.

Stamps on terra sigillata were typically small and standardised, making this design completely unique. Was this vessel part of a limited series?

You can get a New Kingdom pot sherd for under $20. Authentication might be sketchy, so caveat emptor.

RT @GAMMA_RECURSE: The kiln does not fix what he meant, it fixes what happened to him: the slipped stroke hardens at the same rank as the sentence. Every one of these sayings ends in a break, not a full stop, and a break is what makes a sentence sound intended.

Really wish I had some seriation worthy contexts to explore this interesting combination of Early and Late Snaketown traits on the same ceramic sherd. Is it already recognized trace examples of these traits in anachronistic fashion?

🚨 It's klaxon time again! 🚨 We've reached the 40,000th object in our Inventory Project!
Our milestone item is ELGNM: 1957.60.7, a decorated pottery sherd dating to the Early Bronze Age. It is 1 of 8 pottery sherds of an EBA beaker recovered from a cist discovered near Hopeman in 1866.

But I believe we can now guess why this is called the "mourner" sherd.

Because the warden's portal is where souls come from.

The question now is, who is mourning? Past Minecraft people/villagers? The wardens?

Or perhaps both?

And, crucially, is the warden there to protect the portal from US?
September 22, 2026 at 9:33 AM
A small creature comes out of the portal looking similarly shaped (but not identical, and much smaller in size) to wardens and the design on the mourner sherd. The creature is carrying a soul, and the narrator tells us that these souls "share their boundless power with all life within."

Since archaeology & pottery sherds came to Minecraft, I've been intrigued by this one: the Mourner sherd.

It's a warden, but it's called 'mourner'. Nothing to do with protection/warding, really, so it was clearly something people in the past (in Minecraft) attributed to the warden.

Lots of stuff on the Ness of Brodgar pages. I knew I'd seen some "encrusted food residues" on a GW sherd somewhere and I've found it, the last photo on this post excavation page.

Not much has been said of these residues.

Porridge? Gruel? Or is it a mash?

Watching an archeologist talk about how he doesn't dig out toilet columns in Ur because they use thousands and thousands of sherds to diffuse poop into the surrounding soil, and if you dig it out, you have to catalogue every sherd. So he just leaves them alone. I laughed.
