In spring the temple's beautiful shidarezakura erupt in an explosion of pinks. The famed poet Saigyō (西行法師 1118-90), who loved cherry blossoms and wrote countless poems about them, is said to have visited the temple numerous times to illicitly meet Empress Taikenmon'in.

新宿御苑の桜をチェックしに行きました。

ソメイヨシノは先日開花宣言が出たばかりなのでまだまだという感じでしたが、御苑の中には天城吉野、陽光桜、高遠小彼岸、枝垂桜といった多くの品種が植えられていて、満開を迎えていましたよ🌸🌸🌸
I went to check out the cherry blossoms at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. The Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms were still a while away from blooming, as the official declaration of their blooming season had only been made recently. However, many other varieties of cherry blossoms, such as Amagi Yoshino, Yoko Sakura, Takato Kohigan, and Shidarezakura, were planted throughout the garden and were in full bloom! 🌸🌸🌸
