Shigella is more commonly spread through contaminated food or water, but it takes very little of the bacteria to get someone sick.
Another diarrhea-causing illness is in the news, and NC has 2 reported cases

It's funny to me the article says shigella isn't "exclusively" sexually transmitted. It's an incredibly common food contaminant. It's almost exclusively that.

It’s shigella. It’s primarily a FOOD BORNE ILLNESS. You know the kind that has been on the rise since they stopped inspecting food

CDC analyzed 16,788 Shigella samples (2011–2023). Extensively drug-resistant cases rose from 0% to 8.5%.

No FDA-approved oral treatment exists. 86.2% of XDR patients were men; median age 41.

Yeah it’s just shigella and they’re blaming that for why shigella is growing antibiotic resistant but that’s not why. ALL shigella cases and tbh anything treated with antibiotics in general are growing antibiotic resistant. It has nothing to do with sex

People are just eating ass while sick

lol it’s just shigella, I thought there was some new bug migrating from peoples genitals to their digestive tracts.

I don’t know how to explain the sexually transmitted diarrhea thing is just another overblown moral panic aimed at queer men. Just don’t have sex or analingus while you have stomach symptoms. Shigella isn’t some rare diseases. It mostly comes from oral contact with infected microscopic fecal matter

In July of 2025, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network, known as FoodNet, reduced a program that tracked food poisoning infections. The required monitoring was cut down to two pathogens, down from eight. The program had been in place for three decades. Good going fuckwads.
