so apropos of nothing, let me tell you that there are two (2) known trans people in the Mahabharata. Shikhandi, who asked the spirits if he might wholly transition before his marriage; and Arjuna, who rode into battle with Krishna as his charioteer, having witnessed for him the word of God.

I personally love that the book uses wayang orang dancers for the front and back covers. Growing up, I always saw wayang orang as a performance that gave me freedom to see queer interpretation in gestures and visuals. Plus, the front cover character is Srikandi/Shikhandi, which is apt for the book.

The ancient Indian epics are SO AWESOME. Lots of echoes of them in Homer but also in the big chivalric romances about the Knights of the Round Table. Neither of those have a Shikhandi, though. More on Sunday! #booksky #podcasts
