Despite conservative resistance, Princess Aiko's growing public support, demonstrated through her diplomatic engagements and dignified presence, has intensified calls for reform. Experts like Prof Makoto Okawa note the recent amendments 'clearly point towards maintaining the male-line succession,' while supporters argue that excluding Aiko solely due to gender is increasingly unacceptable to the public. Japan has had eight female monarchs in history, though their reigns were typically temporary until a male heir was born. The debate continues as the imperial family faces the same demographic challenges as the rest of Japan.
