A terrible day. The wildfire killed dozens of people and destroyed Lahaina, including the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission (Jodo Shinshu, founded in 1902), Lahaina Jodo Mission (1912) and Lahaina Hokoji Shingon Mission (1902, the 1st outside Asia).

Sacred moment at Koyasan with Goma fire ritual We were invited by priests to visit Koyasan, the birthplace of the Shingon lineage of Buddhism in Japan. We stayed overnight at a temple. Highlights of the visit were walking at night along the Okunoin Cemetery to the mausoleum of Kukai, the founder of Shingon, and participating in a Goma Ritual. The Goma Ritual of consecrated fire is unique to Esoteric Buddhism, which is part of the Shingon sect in Japan. The ceremony is performed with the purpose of destroying negative energies and detrimental thoughts and desires. In the ceremony, a priest burns wooden sticks in the scared fire. The fire symbolizes the wisdom of the Buddha and the wood sticks symbolize what is to be cleansed and released. Daigoji is an important temple of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism and a designated world heritage site. The large temple complex stands southeast of central Kyoto and includes an entire mountainside.

The image honors this important sanctuary of the Shingon sect of Japanese Buddhism, which spans an entire mountainside and stands as a designated World Heritage site. Applying a masterfully textured, painterly overlay that mirrors the feel of an antique hand-colored print or aged canvas, the photographer highlights the enduring interplay of sacred authority, political history, and exquisite architectural design that defines this monumental gateway. The composition anchors itself on the symmetrical elegance of the gate, which is celebrated for its heavy, dark timber frame and a thick, gracefully curving cypress-bark roof (hiwadatabuki). Set against a low, white-plastered wall topped with traditional ceramic tiles, the dark wooden structure provides a stark, imposing contrast that demands reverence. The gate is famously adorned with massive, gleaming gold-leaf crests (mon) that signify its historic imperial connections and patronage. In the foreground, a series of shallow stone steps leads up to the threshold, partially sectioned off by a low, weathered wooden fence featuring an open cross-brace pattern that echoes the geometric gold detailing along the bottom panels of the gate itself. The soft, overcast sky breaks into warm, muted gold and cream tones above the roofline, filtering through the lush canopy of mature trees that rise behind the wall.

I know this is less of a Shingon-exclusive thing and more of a "good at homilitics" thing, but I like to think that Shingon priests are especially predisposed to it. After all, Shingon is in certain ways animated by a spiritual awe for language itself.

There are 88 sculptures of Kobo Daishi (or Kukai, founder of Shingon Sect of Buddhism) on Mt Kokuzo trail. It is supposed to simulate the Shikoku Pilgrimage of 88 Temples, for people who can't afford the trip.

Dainichi Nyorai, also known as the Great Sun Buddha or Mahavairocana, is the central deity of Shingon Buddhism and East Asian Esoteric Buddhism. He is considered the supreme, primordial Buddha from whom the universe emanates, embodying wisdom, light, and the union of the spiritual and material realms. Dainichi is often depicted with the "wisdom fist" mudra, where the left index finger is clasped by the right hand, symbolizing the harmony of these two realms.
