The Emperor Meiji left Kagoshima by ship on July 2, 1872 (Meiji 5), landed in Marugame on July 4 to visit the Shiramine Mausoleum. This is the tomb of the Emperor Sutoku, located within the grounds of Shiromineji Temple in nearby Sakaide - a 3 to 4 hour journey at walking pace.
