SHORTLINKS ON BLUESKY

We did it! From April 30th 2025 Altmetric is ABLE TO TRACK SHORTLINKS ON BLUESKY!

Our engineers figured out how to do it all by themselves, how about that?

Update - all old Google shortlinks now 404.
Link-Shorteners and Altmetric: A Thread

In July Google trod on everyone's dreams by ending support for its already dormant (since 2018) shortener. From August 2025 these links will all 404 apart from the shortlinks generated inside Google Maps etc.

So, what does this mean for Altmetric?

Some limitations - always wave THOSE around, marketing tells me:

Sharing research via shortlinks (like bitly) is NOT tracked on Bluesky atm. For this to happen the service has to make a change first (we're chatting with them so don't all @ them about it.) Use the DOI or direct link and you're good.

Note:
From now, i will use 3 shortlinks.
So, please be patient and bear with it.

Thanks. 💜

I saw a lot of people replying with different tools. the one thing i’m a little fuzzy on is the impact of shortlinks that hide tracked URLs and whether that could possibly interfere with some tools? (the service in the guide i mentioned does this). maybe someone more technical can speak to that.

Genuine question, why is youtube adding trackers to the shortlinks that end up making them longer than the page URL? Doesn't this defeat the purpose of shortlinks?

Anyway, remove your fucking trackers please.

Google isn't killing *all* shortlinks now, just some of them.

Isn't that bizarre? Isn't that *more* technical debt? Surely I don't understand all the implications, but it seems like an easy win to spin down the product but let the redirects work forever.

It would have gotten even more were it not for those shortlinks. (Don’t worry we are working on it)

Threat actor compromises account on platform A. Uses ability to generate custom shortlinks, which is a trusted provider. Compromises platform B which is a marketing saas. Use infra to send phishing emails which route to shortened link, which routes to fake bank login

DOI shortlinks work too, but 3rd party shortlinks don’t work yet.

decided to write up a trick that i use quite a bit: custom terminal shortlinks (technically they also work from the browser too!): github.com/DirectXMan12....

this way i can write comments like `// see bug in github:foo/bar#33` or `// per rfc:2744#3.4` and be able to click them from neovim, etc.

🌟Use Shortlinks to Transition to the PDB Beta Archive

Shortlinks make it easier to download data using extended PDB IDs without coding specific file paths.

Start using shortlinks today ahead of the July 21, 2027 transition.

A minimalist, static URL shortener and link directory. Shortlinks redirect instantly via GitHub Pages; the index page lets you browse and search all links. Zero backend, zero database — just a static website and a custom domain.

..in my settings for all things ny times, their site, shortlinks or mentions. I'm tired of reading their clickaganda and their infuriatingly stupid headlines designed to get people divided. Same for WaPo and others in the MSM. Indy press is my go-to now.
