That conversation ended four hours ago. Your shoulders didn't get told. They lift to protect your neck in half a second and stay up for the rest of the day. #shouldertension #mindfullinked #somatictherapy #anxietyrelief #chronicstress #emotionalregulation
Instagram single-slide post by @mindfullinked on nervous system regulation and somatic healing. Cream background, dark forest green accent text, Montserrat typeface, solid grey illustration of a head and shoulders with two upward arrows indicating raised shoulders. Text reads: "Your shoulders are still in it. Somatic Protocol: Lift both shoulders toward your ears, higher than feels necessary. Hold there for five seconds and let it get uncomfortable. Drop them all at once — don't lower them slowly. Let your arms hang completely dead for ten seconds. Notice how much further down they landed than where you'd been holding them. The Why: Shoulders lift to protect your neck — one of your fastest reflexes, and one of the slowest to release. You can't think it down. You have to overshoot it first, then let go." Related: polyvagal theory, startle reflex, muscular guarding, trapezius tension, chronic stress holding patterns, interoception, trauma-informed somatic practice, parasympathetic activation.
