Basically, if he was showrunner we'd know exactly what he'd do with it and he's said as much, but he's not showrunner and has no interest in being so. I do still think the new showrunner should consult with him though, as he's a fan and industry veteran and can reconcile those two factors together.

Like it's distinctly different from the usual "everyone dies" in a horror movie. It specifically feels like the showrunner packing up their toys and going home because they don't feel like playing anymore.
