#ShudderFridayNightMovie catch-up: GOOD BOY aka OH MY GOD LOOK AT THAT PUPPY FACE, LOOOOK AT IT. Oh also there’s a ghost/demon/curse: THE MOVIE.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Hellraiser (original recipe). An all-time favorite. Dripping with atmosphere and ambition. Iconic special effects too. “Jesus wept.”

#ShudderFridayNightMovie The Midnight Swim. A fantastic, meditative quiet horror about grief and family. If you like Lake Mungo, I’d recommend checking this one out.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was The Vourdalak. Best vampire puppet not featured on Sesame Street. In all seriousness, I loved this. Presents the vampire (vourdalak) as more folk horror than anything else. Haunting, beautiful, and pleasantly surprising.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie from some Friday night a while back…HAGAZUSSA. For when you wish The VVitch had more of a Requiem for a Dream vibe. Bleak and beautiful, haunting and harrowing.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Dangerous Animals. Fun romp of a “serial killer who uses sharks to kill/dispose of victims” tale. That old chestnut. But seriously, this one’s a delight.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Clown in a Cornfield. Really fun slasher. Been a fan of Kevin Durand since Lost & he’s delightfully scenery-chewing here. And the kills are excellent.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Night of the Reaper. This was a fun, twisty slasher. Does some interesting things w/ the final girl archetype.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Frankenhooker. OMG. This movie has EVERYTHING:

* a Frankenhooker
* Elective brain surgery w/ a power drill
* Super Crack
* Exploding people
* Post-decapitation flying heads
* Weird little body horror creatures

Grimy NYC films remain the absolute best. Loved this.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was The Rule of Jenny Pen. Believe the hype. Stellar performances from Rush and Lithgow. What’s amazing is I got mixed up on who was playing who before watching & could easily see them swapping roles & still being brilliant. Creepy, timely, devastatingly inevitable.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Host. Finally watched this found footage flick from the height of the pandemic. Demons & spiritualism always pushes my fear buttons. Tight, clever, creepy, and doesn’t overstay its welcome.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie The Loved Ones. Hell yeah. This one RIPS. Brutal, dark, mix of People Under the Stairs, Hostel, Prom Night, TCM, and Devil’s Rejects. And the combo WORKS. Part of underrated horror sub genre “This person who seems unstable really IS unstable. And how!”

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Sissy. Another really fun Australian slasher. Part slasher, part DARK comedy, part revenge thriller. Some really great on-screen portrayals of panic attacks & absolutely BRUTAL gore once the violence starts.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was The White Reindeer. It was a folk horror kinda night in the Barb house. This time it was time for some ‘50s Finnish Folk Fears.

Were-Reindeer Woman is the shapeshifting monster I didn’t know I needed in my life.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was The Cleansing Room. Really enjoyed this tale of an influencer doing fake exorcisms who runs afoul of a real demon. @kylegallner.bsky.social is incredible in the lead role, as the man with a heart behind the scenes of the show.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie CALVAIRE. I see this grouped with the New French Extremity movement sometimes. While it doesn’t have anywhere near the same level of on-screen violence of the subgenre/movement’s stalwarts, there is something insidiously unnerving about this film & the way it builds.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie Perfect Blue. Creepy, well-done, psychological thriller anime. Put this on a double bill with Black Swan.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Moloch. Dutch/English supernatural/folk horror story with generational trauma & cycles of violence at its core aka “extremely my shit.”

#ShudderFridayNightMovie catch-up: Abraham’s Boys. Based on the Joe Hill story from one of my favorite collections. Not a home run by any means but Titus Welliver was an enjoyable presence as always.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie after seeing @sgj.bsky.social had to check out the new slasher Bloody Axe Wound. Pretty fun meta slasher about a girl who wants to follow in her slasher dad’s footsteps only to find herself falling for one of their intended victims. Little goofier take on Behind the Mask.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie Arabella Black Angel: captures this transition from the giallo to the erotic thriller of the 90s. Sleazy, kinky, trashy. Unapologetically so. Called the killer early on.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie Lake of Death. Norwegian horror film that was part haunted (or is it?) lake & slasher/someone’s bumping off a group of friends one by one tale. Characters had a level of horror/meta awareness that’s interesting. Worth a watch. Based on Lake of the Dead novel/movie

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Pyewacket. Interesting creepy contemporary folk horror tale. Build up of the curse/witch’s appearances at the periphery is best part. Ending felt a little too telegraphed & would’ve benefitted from one more misdirect beforehand in my opinion.

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was One Missed Call. Completely missed this one was from Miike. Really dug it & the commentary on reliance on phones & critique of media is as relevant as ever. Maybe definitely moreso!

#ShudderFridayNightMovie was Strange Darling. Great performances by Kyle Gallner & Willa Fitzgerald.
