Shujaa, whose name means ‘hero’ in Swahili, has lived up to his name from the very start. He is a quiet observer, preferring to watch the action unfold before joining in. While many orphans revel in the mud, Shujaa favours a more refined approach—enjoying lazy, sunlit bathing instead: swt.bio/shujaa

These two former Nairobi orphans made the big leap to Tsavo this year. Shujaa, our former dominant bull, is discovering there are bigger boys here to keep him humble. Meanwhile, Mageno is adjusting to the vast landscape after Nairobi's sheltered environment.

Shujaa, Olomunyak, Talek, and Taroha race back to the stockades, kicking up clouds of dust in their wake. Their enthusiasm is unmatched, eager for their evening bottles and the comfort of their cozy spaces. This little stampede signals the end of another adventurous day.

‘Come on, I’ve got lots to show you!’

That seemed to be Mageno’s message as he steered Ithumba’s newest graduates (and his old Nursery friends) Weka and Shujaa into the bush. In fact, our self-appointed team leader appeared to be quite annoyed when the other orphans held up proceedings!

The elephants at our Nairobi Nursery love their days out exploring in the forest, but they also love the call of their bedrooms in the evening! Waiting for their arrival, bottles of warm milk, freshly mixed by their Keepers! Mzinga to lead, closely followed by Nyambeni, Shujaa and little Olomunyak.

There’s nothing quite as joyful as watching young elephants revel in a good mud bath! Latika, Kerrio, Shujaa, Choka, Kitich, and Mushuru were all together, splashing, sliding, and rolling in the mud—a heartwarming display of carefree playfulness.

Shujaa was rescued after becoming trapped in mud, whilst Weka was found weakened and alone during an aerial patrol. Despite their difficult starts, today they're thriving - and their playful games prove it!

Seeing rescued orphans initiate play is one of the best indicators of positive progress.

Our Nairobi-based exercise class!

Talek's mastering his trunk stretches, Olomunyak and Nyambeni are perfecting their downward-facing-elephant pose in the mud, whilst Shujaa and Weka have given up on the zen approach, opting for contact sports in the form of a wrestling match!

The victims were Ibrahim Fawzi Al-Shujaa, his wife Sahar Kanj Al-Shujaa, and their three children: Razan, Raneem, and Rani. The family had lived in Venezuela for many years and will be laid to rest in Caracas.

Shujaa and Weka have taken their playtime to the next level — going head to head in a very special session: mastering the skill of walking backwards! Whether it’s manoeuvring in tight forest paths or a waterhole, knowing how to reverse is key. Of course, lessons quickly turn into games.

Mageno has met challenges with determination and kindness. When rescued, he was too weak to join the main orphan herd, so we placed him in the ‘blanket brigade’ - a group of younger calves consisting of Mzinga, Nyambeni, & Shujaa - he became its heart, and earned the nickname ‘gentle uncle’.

This week Shujaa and Weka graduated to Ithumba, where they will continue their journey back to the wild. It was high time for our Nursery’s rascals to broaden their horizons in a bigger, wilder environment — and perhaps even learn some humility from older elephant friends in the process!

Milk time is go time!

Mzinga, Olumunyak, Nyambeni, and Shujaa arriving in an elephant train for their warm bottles of the good stuff! Although Nyambeni has clearly decided that today she doesn’t want the ‘effort’ of holding her own bottle… lucky she has attentive Keepers, like Titus, on hand!

All aboard the Sileita train! Few things delight the elephants as much as a mud bath on a hot day, and Shujaa is all in on the action. Lucky for him, his chosen climbing frame is Sileita, one of the Nursery herd’s mini matriarchs.

Guess it's time to launch my profile over here with some recent stuff. Here is my entry for AmigaSquare's boxing gorilla day event, specifically the Disney Ookers tournament!

Goalie Gus being knocked out by Shujaa.

Weka is only a few weeks into Tsavo life, but safe to say she has a handle on things! Last month, she and Shujaa graduated to Ithumba - an important step back to the wild. Known as a bit of a rogue, she's been humble and well-behaved thus far, though still muscles to the front to lead the way.

Just got a chance to read my copy of Shujaa the Discriminator from @moosecatcomics.bsky.social & like Robo before it, it’s one of the best Cyberpunk comics I’ve read in recent memory. Anti Corpo, Anti AI, and really clever. I also love the gritty color art, it really fits the tone perfectly.

SHUJAA OUT AND ABOUT 🦁
Shujaa is thriving in his African life at the ADI Wildlife Sanctuary. Rescued after being abandoned as a #TrophyPet in Kuwait, he arrived in South Africa in May 2024. Today, he spends his days exploring, playing, napping and living freely on his own terms.
