The Michelin Guide will launch its New Zealand edition this month, but it's about 15-20 years too late. Eating out in NZ has evolved to be much less formal. The Grove, Meredith's, Sidart, Clooney, Antoine's, French Cafe would have been in contention. None of them exist anymore except the French Cafe

Any Kiwi foodies out there? I've been asked by a US friend "what is the best restaurant with a tasting menu in NZ?" Did some research and the names The Grove, Sidart and Rata come up repeatedly. Comments? Opinions? Suggestions?

A week ago Sidart shifted from fine dining to a more relaxed Italian. I went on Saturday. TL;DR it is a triumph. The menu is now a la carte & Italian but the front of house & kitchen staff are still the same. The food is still top notch & the service polished & warm. #food #kai #restaurant

Several high-profile restaurants like Sidart have closed recently in Auckland. The lease was up. Clearly, his landlord wasn't offering a cheap deal!

More than one supported The Grove (Auckland) as the "closest to a Michelin star restaurant." No comments re Sidart, also in Auckland. so I think I will drop it from contention. Other mentions - 50/50, Bracken, Moiety. Pacifica. Anyone know Rata (Queenstown)?
