When was printing invented? 1200 years ago, Empress Shotoku commissioned 1 million wooden pagodas containing Buddhist mantras. 100,000 were distributed to 10 monasteries: these are some of the oldest printing from Japan-made 30 years after Bede's death. #Silkroads @britishmuseum

The silver vessel at the heart of the #GallowayHoard is on loan from National Museums Scotland to The British Museum's #SilkRoads.

Its Zoroastrian iconography, inc. fire altars, suggested a Sasanian origin (Goldberg et al.), now confirmed by elemental analysis (Kershaw et al.)!

Both of these gilded silver cups were used as containers for Viking Age hoards. The one from Balmaghie (left) was made in the area of modern day Iran and the Harrogate cup (right) is from Continental Europe. Their beautiful designs & utility were appreciated #medievalsky #museum #silkroads #vikings

The Loulan Hermes is one of the most famous objects of the ancient #SilkRoads - and yet remarkably under-studied. My Oxford colleague @petercnstewart.bsky.social has now taken a fresh look - following clues scattered from Xinjiang to Roman Egypt 2/5

Johannes Boehm and Thomas Chaney tracked nearly half a million coins from AD 325–950.

What they found is astonishing: the fall of Mediterranean trade, the rise of the Islamic world, and the economic rebalancing of Europe - all mapped through money.

By 1293 the lion was in Venice. Was it brought by the Polo family from Kublai Khan’s court? Was it looted from Constantinople? How did it make it along the #SilkRoads? 3/5

Favourite item from British Museum #SilkRoads exhibition. Coin of King Offa of Mercia (757-796 AD). Words Offa Rex stamped on an English copy of an Abbasid dinar from reign of Caliph al-Mansur. Muslim declaration of faith - the Shahadah-around edge of the coin's face

My review of the sweeping #SilkRoads exhibition
@britishmuseum. Ends Feb 23rd. Worth catching.
@lesleydowner.bsky.social reviews the Silk Roads exhibition at the British Museum, which aims to recreate the "irresistibly romantic" allure of the ancient trading route's history.

Consular diptych of Rufus Gennadius Probus Orestes, Rome 530AD; Sutton Hoo sceptre c. 600AD. When I first came across Rupert Bruce-Mitford's idea that the Sutton Hoo whetstone might be an East Anglia version of a late antique sceptre, it seemed far-fetched; now, I'm not so unconvinced! #silkroads

Christ (or an early Christian saint) depicted as a Bodhissattva, dating to the 800s, it was discovered in the Mogao Caves in China and demonstrates the wide cultural connections that existed in the period. I love medieval mappa mundae as they reveal how the world was perceived as much as how it looked. This photo is upside down (taken from the back of the case away from the crowd) which is more familiar orientation. Britain and Ireland are blobs near the margin #maps #medievalsky #silkroads
