#ThrowbackThursday on Kaleidotrope’s 20th anniversary—and on the release day of its 73rd issue—the cover of the first issue, way back in October 2006!

Sillustani is an archeological site located near Puno (Peru), about 3840 meters above sea level, near Lake Titicaca. This place is famous for the "Chullpas" - round constructions made of finely carved and fitted stones of different sizes. Some of them even reach the height of 12 meters.

Father Bernabé Cobo on seeing Inca workers use ramps in the construction of their Catholic cathedrals.

Also seen on this chullpa (funerary tower) at Sillustani (near Lake Titicaca).

Restoration work of a chullpa (funerary tower) at Sillustani, Peru.

Via Museo Municipal Carlos Dreyer

Btw, look at how they’re using those pry bars! Perhaps not too different to how the Inca era workers once used theirs.

Just chilling at Sillustani, where ancient Peruvians built 39-foot towers to store their dead (talk about extreme hoarding! 😅). These mega-tombs are basically prehistoric penthouses with lake views. Because even in death, location matters! #Peru #AncientTombs #RealEstateGoals
