Burying beetle, Nicrophorus humator. An exciting family of the Silphidae. What can this beetle feel, smell, taste and hear with its sensors on its leg?

Red-breasted carrion beetle (Oiceoptoma thoracicum) in the family Silphidae. Seen today in woodland in the grounds of Penicuik Estate, Midlothian. Also often seen feeding on rotting fungi, particularly Stinkhorns (Phallus impudicus). #Coleoptera #CarrionBeetles #Silphidae @colsocbi.bsky.social

A beautiful beetle visited me this evening.
She/he presented him/herself as a dark carrion beetle Aclypea opaca, a species of carrion beetle in the family Silphidae.
Although common, she/he has not been here before.

When out and about the only one of the Silphidae (coleoptera.org.uk/silphidae/ga...) that I see fairly regularly is Phosphuga atra, so i was pleased to see two new species this year. Firstly Thanatophilus sinuatus at Waxham Dunes, and secondly Dendroxena quadrimaculata in Hockering Woods.

Falls ihr euch schon einmal gefragt hat, woher diese merkwürdigen Spuren am Strand oder in den Dünen stammen.

Saw a dead chipmunk on my walk yesterday, and when I walked by the same spot today it was gone but there were a few of these carrion beetles still around.

Een keverlarve, maar te weinig detail voor meer specificatie. Misschien van een aaskever (Silphidae).

Another photo.
I was told it was probably a Silphidae, but I’m 100% sure it isn’t. The head doesn’t match (Silphidae have long heads, shaped a little like Carabidae, this one has a super short head), and the thorax doesn’t match (not flattened like a Silphidae’s).

Get involved & post your photos or artwork of blue insects! 🦋

This is the 8th year I’ve celebrated #BlueBugs, and this year it’s more important than ever to spread some of natures beauty and distract ourselves. Help me make it a good one!
