🌊 @kdetloff.bsky.social unser Leiter vom Team Meeresschutz berichtet.
A tanker and cargo ship tragically collided off the Yorkshire coast yesterday.

Our first thoughts are with the crew and emergency responders. We are deeply concerned about the potential impact of pollution on seabirds and marine life.

It still blows my mind that *anyone* thought the Silverpit Crater in the North Sea was a salt-tectonic structure...🤯

But geologists considered how shallow the crater is, its lack of iron & other factors, & waited for more evidence.

Last year, it arrived:

"Shocked minerals only form at extreme transient shock pressures that cannot be replicated by other terrestrial processes."

If you replied "possible withdrawal of rock support due to salt mobility," congratulations! That's exactly the result of a debate in the Geological Society of London in 2009.

I love this. We unqualified science enthusiasts would yell "HOLY CRAP FIRST CONFIRMED IMPACT CRATER IN GREAT BRITAIN"...

In 2002, petroleum scientists found this vast geological feature under the North Sea, 80 miles off the coast of East Yorkshire.

That centre section is 3km wide, the surrounding rings are 10km end to end - & it's clearly tens of millions of years old.

Go on then. What's your best guess?
