I know, I’m 3 years late to the party, but critters like OpenSnitch (on Linux) and SimpleWall (on Windoze) I’ve found to be awesome help in catching and rejecting _any_ telemetry or tracking stuff I don’t like. Both notify of any new outbound traffic from any app and allow you to allow or restrict based on the app, target site, port, whatever. Then they just do their thing without bothering you about it. I was surprised by how many attempts Discord made to its telemetry sites from the app (all foiled, while it let through the good stuff), but so far my three tracking blocker extensions in LibreWolf haven’t caught any attempts from Discord yet in a browser. That almost seems too good to be true. o.o

I wish there was more discussion about open source firewalls for Windows since it’s such a crucial part of security… Arguably the most important security feature…

You can find lots of instructions easily on the internet, so it’s not difficult to figure it out yourself. And I use Simplewall. And if you can’t get it to work yourself, it’s better to stick with the VPN’s own DNS. And besides, I don’t want to be responsible.

Exactly, what I was thinking. Its even built into simplewall, which looks great but a little much of what I really want right now. I’ve been playing with that in a VM to see if I really want to deal with that. My main concern was it hasn’t been updated in 3 years is it still relevant. Still a layer that doesnt hurt though.

That’s why you need to have several different layers. For instance, using Simplewall, privacy.sexy, and NextDNS together, when they are configured CORRECTLY, is a good start.
