Released OTD 35 years ago. Tell Me Why? by the Sindecut. This mad talented UK crew mixed hip-hop, soul and reggae similarly to Massive Attack and Soul II Soul. Despite a deal with Virgin, and a fearsome live reputation they never quite broke thru. That baseline tho'..

One of my favourite Sindecut releases came out after they were dropped by Virgin. I think they could’ve made a go of it but internal clashes led to the break up www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnkU...

Tune! My all time favourite remains 18" speaker which pairs a Shaka sample with a Sindecut break and a load of dub sirens www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-iz...

35 years ago UK hip-hop was having a moment. Mere days after London Posse dropped their seminal LP, the Sindecut released Changing the Scenery. A head spinning mixture of hip-hop, soul and reggae, with an incredible production that shoulda catapulted them to stardom. Instead it's a lost UK classic.

As for Sindecut, I've considered teaming up with various former members, though I'm not sure most of them are doing much vocal work now. Here I am with Crazy Noddy having a chat at Madame Jojo's a decade or so back. Bye 👋

They were mining a similar stream of hip-hop/reggae/soul as Massive Attack and the Sindecut but it never happened for them. Their album Unrefined is a lost classic.

I feel like I've been screaming into the void for 35 years about how underrated The Sindecut were. The production on their album is amazing. Nothing else quite like them

Meanwhile, just down the road from The Sindecut, Shut Up & Dance had inadvertently crossed into the rave scene from their reggae roots via a fast-rap tune. In 1990 they sampled a tape of Unity HiFi featuring MC Deman Rockers, bringing a bit of UK dancehall to the rave www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8P2...

Most don’t remember Sindecut, sadly. After a few years on the burgeoning UK hiphop/soul scene, they signed to Virgin who probably thought they had a Soul II Soul/Massive Attack kind of act on their hands, but the highest they charted was with Tell Me Why reaching 82 in Oct 1990

Look at the UK acts who got major deals. London Posse: 1 LP. Sindecut: 1 LP. Silver Bullet: 1 LP. A few had a bit more longevity, but no one changed the game the way SUAD did when they crossed over with Ragga Twins. I doubt a major would've let that happen at the time
