#Singularitarianism
this is part of why singularitarianism sells btw, say what you want about AGI cultists but at least they have a theory of change
My grand unifying theory of politics rn is that we haven't invented an ideology for the material conditions of the 21st century yet, so it's just been cargo cults for everybody.

Singularitarianism, ultramodernism, rationalism, rationalism, effective altruism, longtermism (SURREAL)

Warmed over Christianity is *never* the answer (and that's what singularitarianism boils down to, when you examine its structure and origins as a belief system).

Effective Altruism is, to put it mildly, bollocks on stilts—but then, so is singularitarianism (I've come to believe over the past decade).

Yeah this about tracks

TESCREAL stands for "transhumanism, Extropianism, singularitarianism, cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and longtermism" and is a term coined by Timnit Gebru and Émile P. Torres in 2023.

(& as I said on twtter early in 2022: transhumanism, Singularitarianism, Accelerationism, longtermism, effective altruism, & Dominionism are all offshoots of the same root Christian Eschatology, even for the adherents who consciously believe themselves to be "secular;" thus they support each other…

If you don't know what TESCREAL is:

"Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, (modern) Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism" coined by @timnitgebru.bsky.social & @xriskology.bsky.social

hot take: singularitarianism is the natural logical conclusion of Hegelianism
I've had at least a half-dozen people make a big deal about how my love of AI is proof STEMlords need a humanities education or whatever

I was a philosophy major, creative writing minor, lmao
I don’t want to dunk in any one person, as I see this argument a lot, so I’ll post a screenshot rather than quoting it, because this sentiment is common. Peter Thiel has a philosophy degree. Lots of these guys have liberal arts degrees. Credentialism & reverence for institutions won’t save us.

Singularitarianism. 😵‍💫

ppl be out here reinventing thanaterotic singularitarianism on the daily smdh
As writing goes, horror and erotica work in essentially the same way. It’s all about tension and release. Carefully building atmosphere. Visceral descriptions of physical sensations. The more you think about it, the more it makes sense.
Feel bad for people going into Nosferatu and not realizing horror and sex have been inextricably linked for centuries.

Yeah, TESCREAL is a cult—and very powerful and wealthy one.

TESCREAL
=
Transhumanism,
Extropianism,
Singularitarianism,
Cosmism,
Rationalist ideology,
Effective Altruism, and Longtermism

Worth reading to get a better picture of the irrational belief system guiding many in the tech world.
At last, we're starting to see coverage of much of AI culture as the heathen cult it is. I wish, though, they'd build on the fuller work of @xriskology.bsky.social & @timnitgebru.bsky.social re #TESCREAL.

Effective Altruism - it's part of the TESCREAL acronym (Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Effective Altruism, and Longtermism), also known as "the list of ideas from a Harry Potter fanfic that are destroying the planet"

it's all so dumb

one of my favorite answers to this question comes from @timnitgebru.bsky.social and Émile P. Torres: the "TESCREAL bundle" which denotes "transhumanism, Extropianism, singularitarianism, (modern) cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and longtermism" firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph... #ai

unsurprising!

"In doing this, we delineate a genealogy of interconnected and overlapping ideologies that we dub the “TESCREAL bundle,” where the acronym “TESCREAL” denotes “transhumanism, Extropianism, singularitarianism, (modern) cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and longtermism” [7].
