#Sinologists
thankfully for me elderly sinologists just invent their own Romanization systems.
This has been really painful. People I had looked up to as intellectual and moral exemplars ending their careers urging the state to harm people over unconventional gender performance.

real Sinologists know that certain of the field's elder scholars are immortal Scythian mummy-kings fighting out battles that once ravaged Central Asia through the form of bitchy footnotes.

Galaxy Brain: the state department and department of defense are solving the total collapse of recruiting trained sinologists by banning tiktok
And yes, there are more Mandarin tutorials then I have ever seen on TikTok before. Sure most people will give up, but people are definitely using google translate to introduce themselves and attempting to say basic intros in Mandarin.

one of the funny things in Chinese historiography is that the Maoists were *right* about the Zhou being a slave state, and conventional Sinologists often tend to pussy-foot around it (and about sexual abuse and slavery later)
Noticeable, presumably to a certain extent because Babylonians don’t write angry letters about it, how reluctant it is to speculate on the cultural implications of finding, say, the bodies of 13 young women in a marquis’ tomb and instead talking about the amazing set of bells also buried with him.

attn Sinologists: Whatever you may think of the digital humanities, you must admit this would be a funny thing to do to the math nerds
I’m reasonably sure that going by the numbers over the last 2000-plus years, the actual meaning of 萬 is “a bunch.” 百 probably does mean “hundred,” with a common secondary meaning of “about as many as 萬.”

Not knowing or caring much about the Hugos it has been amusing to get glimpses of amateur Sinologists speculating on the nature of the mysterious Chinese National Character

If I were trying to create an opt-in feed of, say, posts by Sinologists about Sinology, would the best way just be to pick a consistent emoji, get everyone else to use it too, and scan for that?

Second question: How would the Sinologists here feel about 🈳?

When Sinologists travel 😋
Will be in New Orleans for a few days for a visit; what should I be eating and where?

Fun read for all sinologists and those interested in China!
Endymion Wilkinson, the sinologist and former diplomat, walks us through his teak-wood bookshelves on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, and recommends five books out of 4,500.

Please please read this. I won’t tag the Sinologists but there is no Sinologist who won’t find this kind of scholarship deeply satisfying.
A tour-de-force of scholarship and detective work: Fara Dabhoiwala reveals that a portrait of an 18th-century Black scientist, long dismissed as a caricature, is in fact a record of the man's mastery of Newtonian physics—and the only painting made in 1759 of the return of Halley's comet.
Fara Dabhoiwala · A Man of Parts and Learning: Francis Williams Gets His Due
The only certainty about the picture is that it shows Francis Williams. No one has ever been able to discover who...

We have a new Sinologist community on Discord - membership has a brief application & isn't *totally* open (it's professional in nature), but if you've been looking for a China group outside of bsky/Facebook/Twitter, this might be the ticket. discord.gg/g6S8WbVW

From an actual China expert: Orville Schell, one of America's most respected Sinologists; he compares Trump to Mao and current events in the US to the Cultural Revolution of 1966-68.

Sinologists: Warlords, competing fail-dynasties, maybe a wannabe Chakravartin king or two in the north. Three, four centuries, tops.

Sinologists! Never mind the other post: here is a feed that actually works! Posts tagged with 🀄️📚 should show up automatically, for real this time. Thanks to @rawkitbawl.bsky.social and @852dude.bsky.social for their help!

Can't believe I forgot to tag this for 🀄️📚, this is what I get for being cute instead of just saying "sinologists."
Chinese literature/.philosophy nerds: any good readings about the brothers 伯夷 and 叔齊 that I should check out? I'm gearing up to translate the relevant chapter of 豆棚閑話 for the newsletter.

(By “Sinologists” and “Sinology” I am referring only to the strictest definitions of these terms, which I just made up and will not tell you. They’re definitely correct, though)

Me when I read "diverse perspective on China" in a blurb and then see a photo of 100% white sinologists underneath it

In agreeing plans for a new Chinese mega-embassy, our govt has prioritised economic expediency over national security, its primary duty. Whilst some sinologists doubt this was the right hill to fight on, the decision displays weakness and will lead to increased Chinese espionage in UK and Europe.

Sinologists and historians, can anyone point me to a good discussion of the history of institutional endowments in China? Monetary resources or endowed land that supports lineage halls, temples etc. over time. Thank you 🀄️📚
