ELLA FITZGERALD: Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it! Let’s do it! Let’s fall in love!
DR. SIPHONAPTERA, THE FLEA WITH A PHD: That’s all you see in me, Ella? All my hard work and I’m just a funny anecdote? Oh, by the way, my personal life is none of your damn business. Let’s go, Greg

🎄 #InsectAdvent Day 20 goes to #fleas - #Siphonaptera are highly specialised wingless ectoparasites.

With around 2,600 species worldwide (62 in Britain), fleas show that even the smallest insects can have a massive impact on ecosystems and humankind.

It’s almost as if the entire system is corrupted, parasites upon parasites. A veritable Siphonaptera of bloodsuckers! And at the bottom is a struggling human who, already beset by medical malfortune, finds themselves entirely drained of blood.

But yeah, 401-k …

SIPHONAPTERA (fleas): very small (few mm) wingless insects that are distinctly flattened from side to side so that they look like a line when viewed from above. powerful jumping hindlegs. some genetic evidence that they might be a type of scorpionfly.

With over a billion specimens in the world's natural history #museums, a key job for curators is to create filing systems to manage them all.
The wonderful @flygirlnhm.bsky.social showed me the #flea collection at @nhm-london.bsky.social, containing drawers labelled "Monstrosities" & "Odds & Ends".

Within their facts to bind 'em
And those truths have smaller truths
And so on, till you find 'em.
