The 2026 season of the BBC Proms begins at 19:00 tonight with Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, and music by Gershwin, Ravel, a premiere by Josephine Stephenson, and Finzi. I've been listening on BBC Radio 3 to a very nice performance of Mahler's Ninth Symphony from the Mahler Academy Orchestra conducted by Philipp von Steinaecker on the penultimate night of the BBC Proms.

This year's BBC Proms season begins this evening at 18:45, and lasts until 13th September. The concerts will feature very many excellent performers. All concerts will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

Because of the protests, the order of pieces in the concert has been changed: the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will now perform Dvořák's wonderful Sixth Symphony.

Let's hope there won't be any problems this time, whatever the protests were about.

One of the highlights for me of this season's BBC Proms concerts is coming up from about 8:30 p.m. tonight: Franz Welser-Möst conducts the Vienna Philharmonic in Anton Bruckner's Ninth Symphony.

The orchestra has started playing Margaret Sutherland's Haunted Hills from the beginning again, a sensible decision.

Coming later will be Tchaikovsky's blowsy First Piano Concerto, then my favourite of all Dvořák's symphonies, his Sixth.

Tonight's performance is by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jaime Martín, with Khatia Buniatishvili as the piano soloist. The disturbance occurred while they were playing Haunted Hills by Margaret Sutherland.
